Roysta w/ Mental Deficiency @ The Pavillion – 30/06/2010

And so we ran into the Pavilion to shelter from the torriential rain, ready to lunge ourselves into a night of cultastic sound. Old Castle Promotions held host to DJ Landmore, Mental Deficiency and Roysta, and with a massive crowd expected, a guaranteed great night was definitely on the cards. The guys running around looked like something Gallows would’ve been proud of, and I began noticing a trend in the half shaved obscure coloured hair look, a lot of the crowd were supporting.
It’s not every gig you walk into and find sets of 3D glasses and a selection of condoms lying on the tables (editor’s note: common in 6th form formals though!), but it should be made a priority, or a necessity.
Mental Defiency graced the stage, and after hearing the amazing reviews they got from THAT St Paddy’s Day gig at Annies, I knew something incredible was about to happen. They looked like Alice in Wonderland characters, on crack. Costume changes, guys in masks (who must’ve been roasting, that room felt like a sauna), people jumping about the stage, people dancing about in 3D glasses, and a generally awesome set up… It was like being at some sort of circus. Or carnival. Or twisted fairy-tale, but it was just amazing.
MD knew how to work the crowd, not only through their charming charisma, but also with banging riffs and catchy choruses, and by the time their last infamous song oozed out the speakers, everyone was crying along “Get her home Get her bucked!” with people sporting t-shirts with the same slogan.
I think it’s safe to say that the tune was well recognised around the Belfast region.
It was quite obvious by the crowd’s reaction that they loved the gig more than life itself. Even by standing on my chair, I couldn’t see with the amount of people standing, it was mental!
By the time Roysta took to the stage my lungs were literally sore from laughing. It was just so surreal. It didn’t feel like a band on stage, but a community. Each one of their songs was different, and by throwing in a naughty mix of Rusko’s Woo Boost, it just pushed the ‘craic-ometre’ to breaking point.
It was a nice change from the usual local scene sound, to hear something totally attention grabbing and if it wasn’t so freakishly warm, I would’ve been bounding about the stage as well, but the heat and a previous injury involving a flight of stairs prevented me doing so.
I genuinely felt for those who couldn’t make it. Easily one of the best local nights I’ve been to in a very long time. Kudos to all those involved

I was one of the guys who helped to organise it , and although it was worlds away from what i’d normally get involved in or really listen to, it was a truly unforgettable night and it was great to see the huge turnout and watch the event turn into a success. Great crowd of people there , all out for a good time. I totally recommend the next one !!
